Golden rules
what to know before you startCombine herbs and heal next to your partner
A lone Herb (Green) heals 25%. Combined it does far more: Herb (G+G) = 60% and Herb (G+R) = 100%. A Herb (Red) on its own heals nothing. The First Aid Spray heals 100% and is the only healing the shop sells (₦1,000).
Use herbs and sprays standing next to your partner: they heal you both at once. Eggs don't: Egg (White) 25%, Egg (Brown) 50% and Egg (Gold) 100% heal only whoever eats them. Never eat an Egg (Rotten): it takes 50% of your health, and on Professional it sends you straight to DYING.
Only your partner can get you out of DYING
At zero health you don't die: you go into DYING and the gauge drains on its own. Only your partner can pick you up, with the partner button. With a healing item they restore some health; without one you're left with a sliver (Fandom says 10%).
It's game over if the DYING gauge runs out, if both of you are in DYING at once, or if you fail the mission (killing Jill in 5-3, for example). On Professional you have under 3 seconds for the rescue. Stay close and keep the AI on Cover in fights.
Shoot a limb, then finish with a melee
A shot to the head, an arm or a leg stuns a Majini and a melee prompt appears: step in and press it. The melee also knocks back the enemies around it and costs no ammo.
The best move in the game: leg shot, then melee from behind. Chris does the Neck Breaker and Sheva the Throat Slit: they kill outright and no Plaga bursts from the head. Don't shoot a stunned enemy again: a hit to another spot breaks the stun and you lose the prompt.
Treasure is your income: you can't buy ammo
The shop sells only weapons, upgrades, Grenade Launcher rounds, the Proximity Bomb, the First Aid Spray and the two vests. No firearm ammo and no herbs are for sale. Pick up everything and break crates and barrels with the Knife.
About 80% of your money comes from treasure. It has no other use and can't be combined: sell it all on the Treasures tab of Item Management (one at a time or all at once).
Upgrade few guns, but all the way
Buying a Capacity level refills the magazine for free: buy those levels with the gun empty and it's free ammo.
Maxing a gun opens another in the shop:
- M92F → M93R (₦30,000)
- Ithaca M37 → Hydra (₦30,000)
- S&W M29 → S&W M500 (₦30,000)
- VZ61 → Gatling Gun (₦50,000, Chris only; the story must be cleared too)
- S75 → Longbow (₦50,000, Sheva only; the story must be cleared too)
A maxed gun is also required to buy its infinite ammo. Every level is on sale from 6-2.
When you quit, answer “Yes”
Quitting from the pause menu asks whether to overwrite your equipment. Yes keeps everything you picked up (items, money and treasure) even if you didn't finish the chapter. No throws it away.
Every farm works like this: go in, pick up, quit with Yes, repeat. A BSAA Emblem counts the moment you shoot it, even if you reset afterwards.
Know the attacks that kill in one hit
These attacks ignore your health and the partner rescue:
- The Chainsaw Majini's grab.
- The Executioner Majini's grab if you fail both prompts.
- The Licker β pounce if you don't dodge it.
- The Reaper's puncture grab.
- A second Duvalia bite before you're rescued.
- A Giant Majini stomp on someone already in DYING.
- The Crocodile in 3-1.
A Majini's rocket puts you in DYING on every difficulty. On Normal the Chainsaw Majini gets back up in a frenzy with its saw running if you haven't died in the chapter: stay away from its body.
Nothing is lost for good
Every cleared chapter can be replayed from Chapter Select with your whole inventory, money and upgrades. A weapon you didn't pick up is added to the shop when its chapter is cleared. What you can miss on one pass:
- 1-1: Gold Ring (kill the Executioner Majini) and Topaz (Marquise) (fight the horde until the dynamite Majini shows up).
- 2-1: Diamond (Pear), from a Majini who runs off as you reach the port; Topaz (Pear), before you open the port gate; Ruby (Marquise), by blowing up the market stall that hides it with an explosive.
- 4-1: Soul Gem (actually defeat the Popokarimu).
- 5-3: Heart of Africa (make Wesker flee before 7:00), plus Sapphire (Oval), Emerald (Oval), Sapphire (Brilliant) and the L. Hawk before he leaves, and the Emerald (Brilliant) on the east balcony before the Jill fight ends.
- 6-1: the 3 Topaz (Oval) (kill the Majini on the south hull and the 2 on the crane) and the Dead Bride's Necklaces from the Rocket Launcher Majini.
- 6-3: Diamond (Marquise), Chris only, a detour after blowing up the volcano rock.
The story so far
saga context, no spoilers for this gameBefore you play: what you need from the saga
- Resident Evil (1996): Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine and Albert Wesker were S.T.A.R.S. teammates. Wesker betrayed them at the Spencer mansion.
- Code: Veronica: Wesker returns with superhuman strength. He and Chris are already personal enemies.
- After Umbrella's fall (2003): Chris and Jill found the BSAA, a UN-backed anti-bioterror force.
- Resident Evil 4 (2004): introduced the Las Plagas parasite. RE5 is set 5 years later, and its Majini are Plaga hosts.
That's all you need: the game tells you the rest through files and cutscenes.
Where and when
2009, the Kijuju Autonomous Zone in West Africa. Chris arrives on a BSAA mission to stop Ricardo Irving before a bio-weapons sale. He is met by Sheva Alomar, an agent of the West African branch.
For Chris it's also personal: Jill has been presumed dead since 2006 and he has been chasing rumours that she is alive. The Kijuju Majini carry Type 2 Plagas; the Ndipaya tribe's carry Type 3.
Where the two DLC episodes fit
Lost in Nightmares is the prologue: August 2006, Chris and Jill raid Spencer's mansion, and Jill goes over a cliff with Wesker to save Chris. The game shows it in a flashback early in chapter 3; playing it after 3-1 keeps the story in order.
Desperate Escape runs alongside 5-3 and chapter 6: Jill and Josh escape the Tricell facility while Chris and Sheva chase Wesker. Its goal is to reach Chris by radio: that's the call from Jill you get in 6-3.
What RE5 sets up
- Wesker: his story ends here. His son Jake Muller appears in RE6.
- Alex Wesker (Revelations 2) is foreshadowed in the files: the Report on Project W in 6-2 is signed Alex W., and the Test Subjects list in Lost in Nightmares names the Project W subjects.
- Jill recovers, and she and Chris recruit Barry into the BSAA, leading into Revelations 2.
- Chris decides to lead teams and train new people again, which is how he gets to RE6.
- Sheva stays with the BSAA's West African branch. Tricell is exposed as a bio-weapons maker.
