Modes

Madhouse: how to prepare

Even though it is unlocked from the start on Switch 2, come in with this kit:

During the run:

  • Save on every first visit to a recorder: there is usually a Cassette Tape next to it.
  • Cages: the Scorpion Key (3) is not needed to finish, but it opens the Main Hall shortcut to the Stairway Entry and Grandma's Room, with the Broken Shotgun and 2 files. The Assault Coin (8) gives the most damage per coin. With 33 coins, skip the Iron Defense Coin or the Stabilizer.
  • Barn: 2 Fat Molded. Neuro Rounds to stun them, then Enhanced Handgun Ammo to the head.
  • Mia in the attic: shoot her head without aiming down ZL, and let her waste time cutting through doors and posts.
  • Keep weapons for the Salt Mine ladder with the tripwire bombs.

Reward: Infinite Ammo.

Nightmare and Night Terror (Banned Footage Vol. 1)

You play Clancy, locked in the Main House Processing Area by Jack. Last from midnight to 5 AM: 5 rounds. You start in the Incinerator Room with no items, 20 slots and 1000 scrap.

  • The compactors (4) produce scrap nonstop, but you must walk over to collect it. They stop about 40 seconds before the round ends.
  • At the workbench you buy weapons, ammo, heals, skills and traps or turrets for walls and floors. Prices rise with each purchase.
  • Corrosive (1500, then +1000) opens locked areas with more compactors. Open them early and buy the compactor upgrade (2500).
  • Jack shows up in round 2 and, with a chainsaw, in round 5. Set traps for him.

Night Terror: compactors give half, enemies are tougher, there are many more Crawler Molded and the first Fat Molded come in a pair. In exchange, each round pays more scrap.

Points from all your runs add up to permanent rewards: Machine Gun Set (10,000), 3 First Aid Meds at the start (40,000), Circular Saw (300,000), Albert-01R (5 million) and Infinite Ammo (10 million). Using the Circular Saw or Infinite Ammo multiplies that run's score by 0.01.

Bedroom (Banned Footage Vol. 1)

An escape room of about 20 minutes. Clancy is handcuffed to a bed in the Master Bedroom and Marguerite keeps checking on him. You have 12 slots and can't guard. If she sees anything out of place, she attacks and resets the room; 3 hits and you die. When she hears noise, put everything back (paintings, lantern, clock) and get into bed.

Key steps:

  • Free yourself with the Spoon. Don't open the right-hand drawer: it sticks.
  • The grandfather clock reads 5:00. Set that time on the bedside clock with the Sewing Needle: the bed slides away and opens a passage.
  • Painting order: A on the left, B in the middle, C on the right.
  • Door padlock: snake, leaf, apple.
  • With the Stove, Solid Fuel and Lighter you drive the insects off the wine and take the Corkscrew.
  • Combine Lantern Hook A and B into the Iron Statuette. On the shadow plinths: the statuette as Medusa and the Fork as the snake.
  • At the end, equip the Knife and charge Marguerite.

Dead rats for "Ratcatcher" (all 3 in one run, only after the second dish): in the corner to the right of the bed, behind the window panels (crouch); inside the second-course stew (eat it even though it hurts); and on top of the Storage Room bookshelf, under the hanging chair.

Ethan Must Die (Banned Footage Vol. 1)

A roguelike run as Ethan: 12 slots, the Knife and nothing else. You start in the Yard, cross a Main House full of traps and end against Marguerite in the Greenhouse.

  • No checkpoints. If you die you go back to the start and leave a statue: break it for one random item you were carrying.
  • Enemies and traps are always in the same place. Crate contents change with every death: brown (1 star, basics), green (2), purple (3, with Steroids or the defense books) and silver chests (4, with the Albert-01R, 44 MAG or Grenade Launcher).
  • One clean hit can kill you. Block everything: it is the only thing that saves you (except from grabs).
  • With Psychostimulants or X-Ray Glasses, a crate with no dot is a trap.

Tips: restart until you find a gun before entering the house. Headshots only; melee is high risk. Once you know the route, you only need to kill about 7 enemies. In the Greenhouse, wait for her in the room off the upstairs balcony, by the turret, so the turret hits her while you shoot; if you run out of ammo, lead her through the tripwires. She can't spawn insects and has far less health than in the story.

21 (Banned Footage Vol. 2)

Lucas's blackjack: Clancy against Hoffman, turn-based and without moving.

  • Cards 1 to 11, one of each, in a single shared deck. Closest to 21 wins; if both go bust, the one who busted by less wins.
  • Each player has one face-down card. Trump cards are dealt at the start of each round and at random when you draw.

Story, 3 games: the finger guillotine, the electric shocks (level 10 is fatal) and the saw. At the end Lucas cheats with Perfect Draw and Desperation. Keep and play "Love Your Enemy": it gives Hoffman the best card and makes him bust.

Survival (after the story): win 5 times; the last opponent is Molded Hoffman. Survival+ (after Survival): 10 wins with shocks; the last is Undead Hoffman. Keep Destroy cards for Mr. Big Head (he plays "Escape" to flee) and for Undead Hoffman (Dead Silence, Oblivion).

Tip: count cards. Since none repeat, the face-up cards tell you what is left in the deck.

Daughters (Banned Footage Vol. 2)

Zoe, on 10 October 2014: the night Jack brings Eveline home. It is short and mostly scripted. You have 12 slots and start with a Lighter. It has two endings, and you will usually see the bad one first.

  • Bad ending ("Butterfly Effect" challenge): follow the objectives, accept the Car Key from Marguerite and use the car in the Garage.
  • True ending ("One Instinct: Survival" challenge): the steps are further down, under "Endings of the episodes".

If you don't bolt the door with the rope when it matters, Jack ambushes Zoe.

Jack's 55th Birthday (Banned Footage Vol. 2)

An arcade mode with Mia: fill Jack's satisfaction gauge with food before time runs out. Guns shoot confetti and enemies wear party hats.

  • 6 stages: Guest House 1, Testing Area 1, Main House 1, Guest House 2, Testing Area 2 and Main House 2. A B rank opens the next one.
  • Each stage starts in an area with an Item Box and preset gear; you can save loadouts. The clock starts when you leave that area.
  • Hurting and killing enemies gives time bonuses. Smashing a Mr. Everywhere multiplies the current bonus.
  • Satisfaction needed: 900 · 1600 · 2500 · 1000 · 2300 · 5000.
  • Time left for an S rank: 14:00 · 9:00 · 12:30 · 4:00 · 7:00 · 12:30.

Known rewards: the Circular Saw for a B rank on Guest House 2 (its kills give very little time) and the Infinite Ammo skill for an S rank on Testing Area 2 (it cuts time bonuses hard).

The 19 foods for the "Miracle Chef" challenge (all appear from Main House 1 on): Spice, Sugar, Cheese, Chicken, Fruit, Beer, Cheap Wine, Garbage?, Cake, Stew and Dulvey Cru, plus these combos:

  • Chicken + Spice = Spicy Chicken · Fruit + Beer = Fruitbeer.
  • Cheese + Stew = Cheese Fondue · Spice + Stew = Tom Yum.
  • Cake + Cheese = Cheesecake · Cake + Fruit = Fruitcake · Cake + Sugar = Sugarcake.
  • Garbage? + Sugar = Baker Family Special.

DLC

What the Gold Edition includes

On Switch 2 everything is available from the start, in the EXTRA CONTENT menu:

  • Banned Footage Vol. 1: Nightmare (and Night Terror), Bedroom and Ethan Must Die.
  • Banned Footage Vol. 2: 21 (with Survival and Survival+), Daughters and Jack's 55th Birthday.
  • Not a Hero: Chris Redfield against Lucas, 1 to 2 hours.
  • End of Zoe: Joe Baker, 2 to 3 hours the first time.
  • Survival Pack: 6 Supply Boxes, 5 coins and Madhouse unlocked.

Each episode has its own saves, stats and unlockables.

Not a Hero: how it plays

Chris Redfield hunts Lucas through the salt mines right after the campaign.

  • 16 slots, and a HUD with health and oxygen: spore-filled air gives you limited time.
  • No crafting. Ammo stacks are bigger.
  • Deflect: press guard (L) just before a hit. The enemy is stunned and a punch prompt appears; a stunned Molded dies in one punch. Even Lucas's instant-kill grab can be deflected.
  • The Night Vision Device shows the traps' laser tripwires. The handgun's Anti-Regen Ammo (RAMRODs) stops regenerating enemies.
  • The Central Cavern is the hub, with an Item Box and birdcages. The doors go in order: red, green, blue.
  • 10 Antique Coins on every difficulty. Cages on Easy and Normal: Steroids 3 and Stabilizer 5. There is another free Steroids at the Mining Work Area Dead End.
  • 9 files. The Survival Pack coins work here too.

Not a Hero on Professional

Unlocked by finishing Not a Hero once.

  • You start with only the Tactical Knife (plus coins and rewards). Guns turn up later: the handgun through the blue door, on a barrel left of the first mine cart; the shotgun in the blue-door trap area, on the shelves after saving the third soldier.
  • Items, lock picks and coins move. There are more enemies (Fumers included), more traps and a shorter deflect window.
  • Cages: Steroids 4 and Thor's Hammer Sight C 6 (exactly the 10 coins). The sight doesn't carry over: you have to collect the coins again each run.

Tips: master the deflect. Only grenades stun Fumers (there are 2 on the desk in the second office after meeting Lucas), and they also disable turrets. Keep the Neuro-stun Grenades for Fat Molded and fast Molded. You can block with your back turned. To shake pursuers, go through a door and come back. Green-door elevator: up, down, up. The Shield Machine stretch is the hardest: headshots, punch finishers and one RAMROD per Fumer or Fat Molded.

Mama Mold: RAMRODs to stun her, then shotgun the exposed head; about 3 times.

Mutated Lucas: Incendiary Grenade, shotgun to the head until the chest weak spot opens, then handgun RAMRODs into it. In the second phase he recovers faster: incendiary, 2 shotgun blasts, incendiary.

End of Zoe: how it plays

Joe Baker, Jack's brother, crosses the bayou with his fists to cure Zoe. It follows the ending where Mia gets the serum.

  • 20 slots. No firearms: the M21 Shotgun only arrives as a reward for finishing it.
  • Fists: with the base layout, ZL is the left punch and ZR the right. Quick combo ZL-ZR-ZR; strong combo ZR-ZL-ZR-ZL. Practice on the punching bag outside Joe's house ("Queensberry Rules" challenge: a 4-hit combo).
  • Stealth kills from behind on enemies that haven't seen you (not Fat Molded or alligators). 5 give the "Swamp Warfare" challenge.
  • Crafting: Scrap Metal, Tree Branch and Chem Fluid make Throwing Spears and Stake Bombs. Spears are for the alligators.
  • Critters (in fridges, under rocks and in tree bark): eat them to heal, or combine with Chem Fluid for a First Aid Med.
  • In the abandoned church you lose all your items; you find the AMG-78 gauntlet and get your gear back at the Yard Item Box.
  • Effigies: 9 fixed Boxer Effigies (+1% fist damage each) and 4 Champion Effigies (+5% each). Crates can drop more at random. 5 files.

Joe Must Die and the Extreme Challenges

Joe Must Die unlocks when you finish End of Zoe on Normal. It plays like Madhouse: saving costs Cassette Tapes, there are more tripwires and explosive canisters, some shortcuts are blocked and some enemies move. Throwing Knives appear, mainly to lure enemies and set off explosives. There is one fixed Boxer Effigy fewer (8). Damage is very high; whether every hit kills outright is unconfirmed.

Extreme Challenges: after finishing the episode, replay on Normal (Extreme Challenges) or on Joe Must Die (Extreme+). There are 10 timed segments (8 zones and 2 bosses); the limits are under Pause > Stats. A segment you beat is never timed again. The AMG-78a and AMG-Dual make the timer run faster: don't use them.

  • Zones 1 and 2: stealth-kill the Molded with their backs to you.
  • Zone 4: craft a spear from the branch by the box and don't touch the synthesizer until the timer clears.
  • Boss 1: fast punches while circling him; Stake Bombs stun him.
  • Zone 6: take the mine by the save point, drop it mid-room, step out and detonate.
  • Zone 7, the hardest: kill the 2 normal Molded first, then the Fat Molded.
  • Zone 8: just run to the bridge.
  • Boss 2: take the effigies out of the box first and use every spear, the shotgun and the mines; then charged punches.

Unlockables

Campaign unlockables

They appear in the Item Box of every file, including files already in progress, and return to it if you discard them. They only work while carried in the inventory.

There are no costumes, gallery or concept art to unlock.

What carries over between runs

RE7 has no New Game+. Every run starts from scratch; what carries over is profile-wide, through the Item Box.

The coin and file challenges ask for everything in a single run. The extra episodes keep their own unlockables in their own Item Box.

The under-4-hours run

This is the run that gives the Circular Saw and the X-Ray Glasses. Do it on Easy, after a first clear (with the Albert-01R in the Item Box).

  • Pausing stops the clock; menus, the map and saving don't. Dying and retrying adds time: load a manual save.
  • Don't rewatch optional tapes, ignore optional calls and run past the Molded.
  • Checkpoints from a 2:30:50 run: Jack in the Garage 0:31, Jack in the Morgue 0:41, Marguerite in the Greenhouse 1:03, Mutated Jack 1:38, Eveline 2:23.
  • Save before Marguerite in the Greenhouse: it is the hardest part.

Combine it with the "Resource Manager" challenges (open the Item Box 3 times at most; the "Manage Items" screen after dying to a boss doesn't count) and "Walk it Off" (3 First Aid Meds or fewer; Herbs count, Steroids don't).

Episode unlockables

Not a Hero (in its own Item Box):

End of Zoe:

Banned Footage: Nightmare banks points toward permanent rewards, 21 hands out new trump cards and Jack's 55th Birthday gives items and skills per rank.

A 3-run plan to finish everything

Switch 2 has no trophies, but the achievement list works as a set of challenges. You need at least 3 campaign runs:

Of the campaign's 38 achievements, 31 are missable. Keep manual saves at key points to replay single challenges.

Endings

The serum choice

At the Boat House (chapter 5), after beating Mutated Jack, Zoe has only one serum and you decide who gets it: Mia or Zoe. It is the campaign's only choice and it decides the ending.

Save at the Shed's Tape Recorder before fighting Mutated Jack. Loading that save lets you see the other ending without replaying the game, only the fight.

Ending 1: give the serum to Mia (canon)

Zoe stays behind, hurt. Ethan and Mia leave by boat. On the ship you play Mia, who resists Eveline and protects Ethan. At the end, Mia is in the rescue helicopter.

This is the canon ending: End of Zoe and Resident Evil Village both start from it. "End of the Night" challenge.

Ending 2: give the serum to Zoe

Eveline kills Zoe on the way. On the ship, Mia has no serum and falls under Eveline's control: you get an extra fight against Mia with the Crowbar. Block her attack, hit once and repeat.

Mia is not in the helicopter; only her belongings and a message from her remain, and the logo plays with darker music. "Just A Memory Now" challenge.

What both endings share

  • A vision of Jack, in his right mind, warns Ethan about Eveline.
  • The credits show a Baker family photo.
  • After the fade to black, a phone vibrates.
  • Either ending gives the difficulty and time unlockables.

Endings of the episodes

  • Not a Hero and End of Zoe have one ending each.
  • Daughters has two. The bad one is the default path: accept the Car Key from Marguerite and use the car in the Garage.

Daughters true ending:

  • Use the Lock Pick on the bathroom drawer and take the Small Component.
  • Fit it into the switch of one of the lamps in the kids' room: the attic opens.
  • Watch Lucas type his phone password and use it on his attic laptop. Read "Lucas' Fuck-You List".
  • That opens the tackle box on the Veranda, with the White Dog's Head.
  • Go through the dog-head door to the Yard and into Zoe's Trailer: read "Mia's Letter to the Bakers" on the table and interact with what Mia is holding.

The password is 1019: you see it over Lucas's shoulder when he turns his phone on at the table.

Secrets

Mr. Everywhere

20 bobblehead figures (a football team mascot) hidden across the campaign. One Knife hit or one shot breaks them, and they jingle when you are close.

  • The count is profile-wide: the ones you break count in every run, and the Stats screen (pause) shows how many you have.
  • All 20 give The Essence of Defense and Walking Shoes.
  • #20 only appears on the chapter 8 return to the Guest House, in the basement Storeroom.
  • The X-Ray Glasses mark them on screen.
  • Jack's 55th Birthday has them too: they multiply the time bonus.

The 3 Treasure Photos

Each photo shows a spot where something is hidden. You have to carry the photo to find it.

They are lost when you leave the estate at the end of chapter 5.

Tricks the game doesn't tell you

  • Bomb in the mouth: with a Remote Bomb equipped, when a normal-armed Molded or a Fat Molded grabs you, press ZR to stuff it in and detonate with Y. Instant kill and the "That's a Spicy Meat-a-ball" challenge.
  • Free "Manage Items": after dying to a boss, that screen works like an Item Box and doesn't count as an opening.
  • Nice Try: put an unrelated item (the Clock Pendulum, a coin) on a shadow plinth.
  • Chainsaw against chainsaw: in the Morgue, the hits cancel out.
  • Can't Catch Me: on the "Mia" tape, if Marguerite spots you, let her catch you. Restarting from the checkpoint doesn't count as being seen; escaping after she has seen you does.
  • The "Mia" and "Happy Birthday" tapes show you the Old House and the Party Room solution ahead of time.

Trivia

  • The old woman in the wheelchair turns up all over the estate and never attacks. Who she really is is one of the story's twists.
  • The Lantern demo became the "Mia" tape; the Sewer Gators crew comes from the Beginning Hour demo.
  • The Dirty Coin (a spare Antique Coin for finishing the Beginning Hour demo) came from PS4; it doesn't appear to be available on Switch 2.
  • In the Japanese release of 21, fingers are bent instead of cut off and a bomb replaces the saw.
  • The credits list Alan Droney as "Alan Douglas".
  • Chris looks and sounds different from earlier games: David Vaughn voiced him only in this one.
