Enemies

Every common enemy: where it appears, where to hit it and how to handle it.

Lycans

Lycan

The village on every visit (from ch. 2), Moreau's Reservoir (ch. 8), Otto's Mill, the Forbidden Woods, the Ruins and the Stronghold (ch. 10) and Chris's mission (ch. 12).

Weak point The head: ×2.4 from handguns, ×2.88 from sniper rifles, ×3.0 from shotguns. The legs, ×1.5 (and it slows them). Torso and arms, ×1.0. Explosives, ×2.0 anywhere.

They hunt in packs. Unaware ones crouch on rooftops with their heads down or are eating; a shot makes one roar and alert the rest. They crouch-walk, run on all fours at a distance, climb through windows, jump onto roofs and batter through anything in the way. They duck and dodge when you aim at them.

  • Counter: shoot its head before it strikes. It flinches and lunges to grab you: hold L at that moment and Ethan kicks it away. It fails if you stand higher than the Lycan or on uneven ground.
  • Guard: with L held they can't grab you. Press L again right after a blocked hit to shove it back (Push Comes to Shove).
  • Groups: shotgun, explosives and gunpowder barrels. Singles: handgun or shotgun. Distant or unaware: rifle.
  • Archers (flaming arrows at the Stronghold ruins): snipe them, or close in and they drop the bow to fight in melee. Knocking a flaming arrow out of the air with the Knife earns Fast Reflexes.
  • Flour sacks: shoot one and the dust cloud hides you.

Drops: Lei, Rusted Scrap, Chem Fluid, Gunpowder and sometimes a Crystal Skull (900). Never ammo or healing.

Armored Lycan

The ch. 2 ambush, the village's Old Man's Front Yard (ch. 5), the Underground Cavern of Moreau's Reservoir (ch. 8), the Stronghold Main Hall (ch. 10) and Chris's mission (ch. 12). Village of Shadows adds more in the village: East Old Town Farmer's House, the Lone Road and the Fallow Plot.

Weak point Explosives and the shotgun to knock the helmet off; then the head (×3.0; shotgun ×3.75). The legs take ×2.0 (shotgun ×2.5); torso and arms, ×1.0.

A big Lycan in a helmet and armour, far tougher, that charges head-on. Take the helmet off first: a Pipe Bomb, a Mine or a Hand Grenade (Chris) strips it in one go, and the shotgun works too. With the head bare, shoot it in the face. If it closes in, back away laying Mines. In the Underground Cavern it comes with other Lycans: a Pipe Bomb or an Explosive Round on the group, and if it goes wrong, climb the ladder.

Drops: Perfect Crystal Skull (10,000).

Vârcolac

East Old Town (ch. 8), Moreau's Laboratory (ch. 9) and 2 in Chris's mission, as you leave the village gates toward the Fallow Plot (ch. 12). The Fallow Plot's Vârcolac Alfa (ch. 9) has its own card.

Weak point The whole body: ×2.0 from almost everything, magnum ×2.6, M1851 Wolfsbane ×5.2, explosives ×2.4. Game8: shotgun, explosives and magnum.

A giant Lycan that patrols a path and, once it sees you or you shoot it, charges to grab you. It doesn't fit through doors or windows: get inside a building, let it get stuck clawing at the opening and punish it there, without standing right at the door (it grabs you and throws you out). It can climb onto roofs. Its grab can be blocked with no damage and a shotgun blast breaks up its long-range attacks. Put Mines at the openings. If you are short on supplies, sneak past. As Chris, Flash Grenades stop its sprint.

Drops: Crystal Beast (20,000).

Castle creatures

Moroaică

Castle Dimitrescu (ch. 4), the Beneviento Entry and the Graveyard (ch. 6 and 7), the Reservoir Entry and Moreau's Laboratory (ch. 8 and 9), the Riverbank Treasure House and the Riverbank Cave Camp (ch. 9), the Stronghold dungeon (ch. 10) and the Lone Road before Mother Miranda (ch. 12).

Weak point The head (×2.4, but ×4.0 from sniper rifles) and the body (×2.0). Game8 recommends explosives to drop groups, but in the game data they only do ×0.67: use them to knock Moroaică down, not to kill them.

Slow, clumsy hags (faster on higher difficulties) with claws, bites, swords, sickles and axes. They nearly always come in groups: don't get cornered. Some play dead on the floor or crawl out of wall holes or pools of blood. Running past is often best.

  • Block or stun them before a sword thrust.
  • When one staggers back and snarls, she is open to a few knife slashes.
  • Shoot the weapon arm and she drops it (Butter Fingers, 1,500 CP).
  • Set one on fire (Medium Rare, 3,500 CP): there are burning Moroaică in the Riverbank Treasure House. A burning Moroaică loses 50-60 HP per second, but the fire stops at 1 HP: finish her yourself.
  • Lady Dimitrescu slaps them aside or kills them if they get in her way.

Drops: Lei, Rusted Scrap, Chem Fluid, Gunpowder and sometimes a Crystal Skull (900). Never ammo or healing. One in the Chamber of Solace drops Ingrid's Necklace.

Samcă

The Castle Dimitrescu Rooftops (ch. 4), the Fallow Plot after the castle (ch. 5), the south side of Moreau's Laboratory (ch. 9) and Otto's Mill, summoned by the Uriaș Drac (ch. 10).

Weak point Very fragile: one sniper rifle, magnum or Handcannon PZ shot to the body kills. With other guns, body ×2.0 and wings ×1.0.

Winged hags, weaker than Moroaică but agile: dodge sideways.

  • Snipe the perched ones before they engage: the F2 Rifle is in the Attic, just before the Rooftops. A long-range rifle kill earns Trick Shot.
  • Or knock them down with the handgun or shotgun and finish them on the ground with the Knife; Game8 uses this to farm Lei.
  • Take them one at a time: rushing past makes them pile up.
  • Kills over the roof edge lose the drop.
  • Kill one with a Mine for Down to Earth (5,000 CP).

Drops: Lei, scrap, Herb and sometimes a Crystal Wing (2,400).

House Beneviento

Living Dolls

House Beneviento (ch. 6).

Weak point None: you have no weapons inside the house.

Donna's dolls, animated by fragments of her Cadou, with metal spider claws. They are harmless except during the hide-and-seek with Angie: if you take too long or retrace your steps, they laugh, shake and attack you in an unavoidable cutscene that takes a lot of health, and you can't heal there. Find Angie fast by following the blood smears on the walls. Before Donna, a group jumps on Ethan in a cutscene and he shakes them off with no damage.

Heisenberg's Factory

Hauler

Heisenberg's Factory (ch. 11): the Disposal Chamber (B4), the B4 stairs, the Foundry, the Generator Room Walkway, the Engine Room, the Construction Tunnels and Heisenberg's Quarters.

Weak point The head (×2.4; one sniper rifle head shot kills). The rest, ×2.0; the goggles count as ×1.0.

Modified corpses with cranial headgear and scrap-metal axes that work the factory floor. They are slow and easy to avoid. Hits knock the headgear off, and every shot after that does more damage; the rifle saves bullets. Heisenberg's Quarters has 4 together and the Engine Room 5: go in with the shotgun ready.

Drops: Lei, Chem Fluid, Herb and sometimes a Polycrystal Skull (3,500).

Soldat Eins

Heisenberg's Factory (ch. 11): 9 in total, in the Examination Room, the Experiment Passage, the Backup Generator Room, the Small Power Regulator Room (2), the Large Power Regulator Room, the Materials Room, the Foundry and the Operating Room.

Weak point The red reactor on the chest (×2.0). Head, arms, torso and legs take only ×0.4. Explosives, ×2.0 anywhere.

A human with a heart-reactor (a Cadou), one drill arm and cyber headgear. Slow, with a long wind-up and very heavy hits. It covers the reactor with the drill: shoot the chest when it rears back to attack. The handgun is more accurate; the shotgun point-blank does more damage.

  • A hit from a powerful gun (W870 TAC) stuns it briefly.
  • A head shot breaks the control unit: it drops its guard but gets more aggressive.
  • The drill can't be blocked.
  • It explodes on death instead of crystallising.
  • In the Small Power Regulator Room, shoot an electrical box on the wall when it is next to one: it gets electrocuted and stunned.

Drops: Crystal Mechanical Heart (5,000).

Soldat Zwei

Heisenberg's Factory (ch. 11): it bursts from a container dropped on the Large Power Regulator Room walkway, and prowls the north room of the Boiler Room (B3). Village of Shadows adds one in the Small Power Regulator Room and one on the Grinder Shaft Walkway.

Weak point The reactor on its back (×2.0). The armour, ×0.4. Explosives, ×2.0.

Two drills and more armour. For Game8, explosives are the only sure-fire way. A heavy hit, a head shot or an electrical box makes it kneel: circle behind it and shoot the back. In the Boiler Room, use the room's electric trap.

Drops: Large Crystal Mechanical Heart (9,000).

Soldat Jet

Heisenberg's Factory (ch. 11): 2 drop in on the Grinder Shaft Walkway (MB3) as you climb. Village of Shadows adds one on the Generator Room Walkway after the Relief Mold.

Weak point The chest reactor (×2.0); the rest ×0.4, and the jet engine takes no damage. Explosives, ×2.0.

It wears a jet pack. A red laser sight marks its line before a swift dash: get off that line. Explosive Rounds or Pipe Bombs stagger it; otherwise wait for it to open its arms to attack and shoot the chest. Mines on the balconies help.

Drops: Large Crystal Mechanical Heart (9,000).

Soldat Panzer

Heisenberg's Factory (ch. 11), after Heisenberg's Key: one in the Materials Room and one in the B4 Passage or the B3 Maintenance Passage (whichever you reach first). Village of Shadows adds one by the Foundry's casting machine.

Weak point Explosives and magnum. The armour first; then the red chest reactor (×2.0).

Armoured, with three drills per arm, and immune to most small-arms fire. Explosives strip its armour: Mines, Pipe Bombs or Explosive Rounds (about 2 from the GM 79). Then shoot the chest. It follows you everywhere except into the Duke's shop. Strip all its armour for Strip Miner (2,500 CP).

Drops: Perfect Crystal Mechanical Heart (25,000).

Shadows of Rose

Face Eater

Shadows of Rose: the whole castle (sor01), especially after the Silver Mask and between the Executioner's phases, and the Deep Stratum (sor03).

Weak point Head shots and the stun from Rose's power.

Faceless figures that move fast and jerkily. Their grab does heavy damage; they also swipe. Rose can't block and ammo is scarce: avoid them, or stun groups with your power and dodge past. Wait for the reticle to tighten before you fire: a focused shot does more damage.

  • Liquid-void pools: Face Eaters drag Rose under and you have a short time to get out before you die, whatever your health. Break the sclerotia with your power to clear the mould.
  • A Pipe Bomb or the shotgun clears the groups in the Execution Yard.

Mia Mannequin

Shadows of Rose: House Beneviento (sor02).

Weak point Eye contact and, at the end, the stun from Rose's power.

They only move when you are not looking at them; one touch is a game over. Walk backwards with all of them in view and check the Hand-drawn Map; they are slow, so you can turn and sprint for a moment.

  • To make one step away from a door, look away for an instant and look back.
  • To break a ceiling sclerotia, get the mannequin in the same view as the core.
  • In the Fuse run there end up being four.
  • After Ethan's memories, the ones Eveline throws at you no longer stop when looked at: stun them with your power.

Giant Doll

Shadows of Rose: House Beneviento, in the stretch where Rose is shrunk (sor02).

Weak point The stun from Rose's power and the cages that drop when you break certain cores.

They patrol with searchlights: they only see what their white cone lights up and they can't hear. Move out of their sight, under furniture and behind cover. At full health Rose survives one hit (no instant death); then get away and your health regenerates. Breaking certain cores drops a cage that distracts them for good. Your power stuns a stationary doll so you can slip past: refill it with the Sprig of White Sage in the Connecting Corridor and the Kitchen.
