Modes

Campaign: recommended order and replays

The Prelude plays by itself the first time you boot the game and opens Leon's, Chris's and Jake's campaigns. On Switch, Ada's is available from the start as well.

Order: the first three in any order, and Ada last. Clearing your first campaign gives you 8 skill sets, and clearing all four opens infinite ammo and the epilogue. Ada's story fills the gaps in the other three.

Replays: going back into a cleared campaign keeps each character's weapons and items; New Game starts without them. Skills, Skill Points, emblems, figures, medals and titles are global and never reset. For Professional: Defense and Firearm maxed and an infinite-ammo skill (Infinite Magnum for Leon or Jake, Infinite Shotgun for Chris or Ada).

The Mercenaries

A score attack: kill as many enemies as you can before time runs out. Play solo, duo online or in split screen. The clock starts at 2:00 and there are 150 enemies: kill them all and the leftover time turns into points.

  • More time: time crystals +30, +60 or +90 s (break them with strikes or slides); melee kill +5 s, finisher +7 s, counter kill +10 s.
  • Combo: another kill within 15 s. Green combo crystals give +1,000 points per kill while they last.
  • Its own skills (bought separately) and only 1 equipped.
  • Solo ranks: S 140,000 · A 100,000 · B 80,000. Duo: S 220,000 · A 180,000 · B 120,000.
  • 10 maps, all open on Switch. On Switch you taunt with L.

An A or S rank in a character's default costume unlocks their EX1 costume (that's the rule on the other versions; the Switch manual says B rank or higher for Leon).

The Mercenaries No Mercy

The hard version of The Mercenaries: 300 enemies instead of 150, more aggressive but weaker, and more rare drops (grenades, magnum ammo and 12.7mm Ammo). It supports co-op and skills. It's open from the start on Switch.

Sources disagree on whether its ranks also unlock characters and costumes; to be safe, earn those in regular The Mercenaries. The Left 4 Dead 2 cast is PC-only.

Agent Hunt

You invade another player's online campaign as an enemy creature (zombies, J'avo and their mutations, Napad, Rasklapanje and others, never bosses). You win if a player dies in that area; when you die, you respawn as another creature until the agents clear the area. Your creatures get stronger with the host's difficulty.

To keep invaders out, play offline or set Agent Hunt: Don't Allow in System Settings. Ada's campaign never allows invasions.

DLC

What the Switch edition includes

The Switch version includes all the downloadable content: the Onslaught, Predator, Survivors and Siege modes, the 7 extra maps for The Mercenaries (Rail Yard, High Seas Fortress, The Catacombs, Requiem for War, Liquid Fire, Rooftop Mission and Creature Workshop), the costumes that used to be RE.NET rewards (now unlocked by playing) and the Japanese voices in every region.

All four modes are online only: no split screen. It's unconfirmed whether local wireless play covers them or whether matches can still be found online on Switch. Their achievements belong to PlayStation, Xbox and Steam; on Switch they only give costumes and medals.

Onslaught

A 10-minute 1-on-1 duel, each player in their own copy of the same stage. Chain kills and the creatures you kill are sent to your rival when the combo ends, when it reaches 30, or when you taunt. You win if your creatures kill them; otherwise the higher score wins.

  • Combo 1-15: level 1; 16-29: level 2; 30 sends the strongest creatures.
  • Taunts (+50 %), melee kills and counters raise your attack up to 300 %; taking damage lowers it.
  • Stack up 50 sent creatures left alive and your side jumps to maximum difficulty until you drop below 50.
  • Guardians are very strong creatures that drop a powerful weapon.

It's the likeliest source of EX2 costumes on modern consoles. The Switch manual lists, for Leon, playing Onslaught 10 times.

Predator

Each player takes a turn as the Ustanak (as many 2-minute rounds as players). Agents score by damaging him, rescuing and reviving; the Ustanak scores by downing agents and wiping everyone out before time runs out.

  • The Ustanak sees agents when they fire, when he uses his intimidate, or when an Oko (a respawning scout) spots them.
  • Each round a power weapon spawns for each side (a rocket launcher for agents, a shotgun arm for the Ustanak): destroy your rival's before they grab it.
  • Against him: shotguns and magnums. On Switch the Ustanak sprints faster.

It's the likeliest source of EX3 costumes. The Switch manual lists, for Leon, defeating the Ustanak 5 times in this mode.

Survivors

Free-for-all or team (Alpha vs Bravo) deathmatch for 2 to 6 players, in 5-minute rounds. A dead agent comes back as a creature (zombie or J'avo depending on the map); a creature that kills an agent comes back as an agent.

  • Points: damage ×5, killing an agent +5,000, a creature +1,000, last one standing +12,000.
  • Every character and stage from The Mercenaries, with mode-specific loadouts and power weapons around the map. The Kung Fu Fighting achievement asks you to survive to the end using only physical attacks: Jake is the one for it.

Siege

Two teams, 2 rounds: agents protect an AI-controlled BSAA rookie and creatures try to kill him; then they swap. In round 2 the creatures win if they kill him faster than their rivals did; if nobody kills him, the team whose rookie kept more health wins.

  • Agents: give him orders ("come", "wait", within 10 m); waiting in cover heals him; revive him when he's down; destroy the time-reduction items (−20 s) before they vanish.
  • Creatures: you respawn as a random creature, stronger as time runs down; break the enemy crystals to release powerful allies.

Unlockables

What's open from the start on Switch

  • Leon's, Chris's and Jake's campaigns after the Prelude; Ada's too.
  • Ada in co-op, with Agent as player 2.
  • All five difficulties, No Hope included (unconfirmed on hardware).
  • Agent Hunt, The Mercenaries with its 10 maps, and The Mercenaries No Mercy.
  • The four downloadable modes.
  • Chapter Select opens chapter by chapter: you can only pick checkpoints in chapters you've cleared.

The Mercenaries characters

  • Leon, Chris, Jake and Agent: from the start.
  • Helena: B rank or better on Urban Chaos, with any character.
  • Piers: B rank or better on Steel Beast.
  • Sherry: B rank or better on Mining the Depths.
  • Ada: clear her campaign (on Switch, also by winning Survivors matches).
  • Carla Radames: own every default character and every EX1 costume.

As a split-screen duo the B rank is much easier: 120,000 points between the two of you.

EX costumes

Leon, Helena, Chris, Piers, Jake, Sherry and Ada have 3 costumes each; Agent and Carla have none.

  • EX1: A or S rank on any The Mercenaries map, solo or duo, wearing that character's default costume (that's the rule on the other versions; the Switch manual says B rank or higher for Leon). It only unlocks the EX1 of the character used.
  • EX2 and EX3: on Switch, per one source, an S rank in The Mercenaries with that character or at random from playing the extra modes. The Switch manual lists, for Leon: EX2 = play Onslaught 10 times; EX3 = defeat the Ustanak 5 times in Predator. It's unclear whether the others follow the same rule.

Switch only: EX costumes can also be worn in the campaigns (scenes still show the default outfit). Each costume you unlock also opens a figure.

Skills that unlock

Maxing the 12 levelled skills costs 954,000 SP.

Figures, files and collections

  • Each Serpent Emblem opens a file (80 in all, 20 per campaign). Read them in Special Features.
  • There are 78 figures, in Special Features → Collections:
  • 29 for collecting all 4 emblems in a chapter.
  • 19 for collecting emblem no. 1, 2, 3 or 4 in every chapter of a campaign.
  • 5 for all 20 emblems of a campaign: Leon (Deborah Harper and Deborah), Chris (Haos), Jake (rare Sherry Birkin) and Ada (Carla Spores).
  • 21 for the EX costumes (7 characters × 3).
  • 4 with an undocumented condition (three Simmons and the zombie President).
  • The Collections grid has one row per chapter and one column per emblem, in order of appearance: use it to see which one you're missing.

Dog tags, titles, medals and achievements

  • Dog tags (Play Game → Dog Tags): template, emblem and title. There are 21 templates: the default plus one per cleared chapter.
  • Titles: earned by playing (play time, Skill Points earned, kills with each weapon, chapters) and rated 1 to 4 stars. The titles screen shows your progress.
  • Medals: from every mode; shown after each chapter or match. Every chapter has story medals and optional challenges (no damage taken, handgun only, no reloading…).
  • Achievements and trophies: the list depends on the platform. PlayStation awards trophies (with the platinum), Xbox and Steam award achievements (the "G" on each entry is Xbox Gamerscore) and Switch has no achievement system. The 70 from the other versions (50 for the game and 20 for the downloadable modes) serve here as a challenge list; every version has the chapter medals, listed under their in-game English names. Dog-tag emblems are those achievements' icons, and it's unconfirmed whether they can be earned on Switch.

100 % roadmap for the pair

1. Finish the Prelude and customise your dog tag right away. 2. Play the campaigns on Normal in split screen, Ada last. Break every emblem as you pass and do the chapter challenges when you reach them: the Leon 2 survivors, the Chris 4 VTOL, the helicopter pilot as Jake in Jake 4 and the bridge stealth as Ada in Ada 4. 3. Swap characters now and then: the Hydra (Helena), thermal scope (Piers) and Stun Rod (Sherry) challenges need player 2. 4. With all four done: buy infinite ammo and farm Skill Points for Professional with Defense and Firearm maxed. 5. The Mercenaries as a duo: B rank on Urban Chaos, Steel Beast and Mining the Depths, A rank with each character in their default costume (on Switch a B may be enough), and finally Carla Radames.

Endings

One ending per campaign, no branches

RE6 has no choices that change the ending: every campaign always ends the same way.

  • Leon: closes out in Tall Oaks and Lanshiang, at the Quad Tower (Leon 5). Achievement: The Trouble with Women.
  • Chris: ends in the underwater facility (Chris 5). Achievement: Duty Calls.
  • Jake: also in the underwater facility, with the last showdown against the Ustanak (Jake 5). Achievement: See You Around.
  • Ada: returns to the Quad Tower (Ada 5) and ties up the other three's loose ends. Achievement: What's Next?

After each chapter you see your rank (S to E), with no reward. Clearing a difficulty gives no in-game prize either.

The secret epilogue "New Purpose"

A 1:18 scene with Jake (in Japanese, "NEXT LEVEL"). It's the epilogue of Ada 5 and, from then on, it plays at the end of any chapter 5.

Sources disagree on when it unlocks: after clearing Ada's campaign, or after clearing all four campaigns in any order. On Switch Ada is open from the start, so the safe way to see it is to play Ada last. Afterwards you can replay any chapter 5 to watch it again.

Optional and alternative scenes

  • I Prefer Them Alive (Leon 2, the cathedral): kill the Lepotitsa before it infects the last two survivors, Jenny and Megan. They only become vulnerable once they reach the altar. Save them and they stay by the altar, and a pew holds a Green Herb and a Red Herb. Explosives and a sniper rifle; stay out of its gas.
  • Hard Choice (Jake 4, playing as Jake): climb the helicopter's rope and shoot the pilot point-blank; it's a QTE. If Chris and Piers shoot it down first (a different scene), quit at once: the game saves and you'd have to replay the chapter.
  • Both sides of each intersection: shared scenes look different from each campaign (Medical Research Center, Quad Tower). Playing all four is the only way to see everything.

Secrets

Chapter challenges that need a specific character

  • Bring the Heat (Piers, Chris 2): right at the start, crawl out of the overturned vehicle, run back as far as you can, switch on the Anti-Materiel Rifle's thermal scope (X + ZL) and headshot a J'avo sniper in the far windows (50 m). If you miss, restart the checkpoint.
  • High Voltage (Sherry): 10 kills with the Stun Rod charge (hold ZL + ZR). Easiest on Amateur; in Jake 1 after the scene where Sherry asks for Jake's blood, or at the start of Jake 3.
  • Stuntman (Helena): 20 kills with the Hydra's Quick Shot; start in the Leon 1 elevator.
  • Flying Ace (Chris 4, the end): fly the VTOL without a scratch. If the indicator at the bottom right flashes red, restart the checkpoint; dying and continuing doesn't work.
  • Sneaking Around (Ada 4, Aircraft Carrier - Bridge): get through unseen. Bring normal bolts, kill 2 guards and 2 "cockroaches" with the Crossbow only, avoid the spotlights and slide under the second one. Being seen by Chris is a mission failure.

Hidden medals in every campaign

Optional challenges the game doesn't announce (bronze medals unless noted):

  • Leon: kill the 3 zombies hiding on the rooftop (Leon 1); 5 zombies from the mine cart (Leon 2); put out the flames without your partner's help (Leon 3); blow up every fuel tank at the crash site and put a creature's hand in the microwave (Leon 4); clear Leon 5 without using the rocket launcher.
  • Chris: kill a paratrooper in mid-air (Chris 2); ride down the slide (Chris 3); don't open the one-way doors and reach the missile in 3 minutes or less, and destroy 3 helicopters with the VTOL's cannon (silver) (Chris 4).
  • Jake: find the hidden storage room (Jake 1); clear the cave without killing anything but the Ustanak (Jake 2); kill 5 enemies with the camera turrets (Jake 3); shoot 10 J'avo off their motorbikes (silver, Jake 4); counter one of the Ustanak's attacks (silver, Jake 5).
  • Ada: find a shortcut (Ada 1); have enemies break down 10 walls (Ada 2); use a creature's attacks to kill every zombie in the area (Ada 3).

The Mercenaries secret enemies

Each map hides a high-scoring enemy that appears if you meet a condition (single source):

  • Urban Chaos: Napad (1,500) for 15 counter kills before 80 kills.
  • Steel Beast: Gnezdo (3,000) for 25 finishers before 80 kills.
  • Mining the Depths: Strelats (1,500) for 70 kills in under 300 s.
  • Rail Yard: Ubistvo (5,000) for 25 Quick Shot kills before 80.
  • High Seas Fortress: Gnezdo (3,000) for 40 melee kills before 80.
  • The Catacombs: Strelats (1,500) for 20 Quick Shot kills before 80.
  • Requiem for War: Gnezdo (3,000) for 70 kills in the first 300 s.
  • Liquid Fire: Napad (1,500) for 25 finishers before 80.
  • Rooftop Mission: Napad (1,500) for 20 counter kills before 80.
  • Creature Workshop: Ubistvo (5,000) for 40 melee kills before 80.

Rare pieces and trivia

  • King (Gold), the 10,000 SP piece, sits in a single chest: the secret vent room in Chris 3 where you hunt the Iluzija (one source).
  • Queen (Gold) (5,000 SP) only comes from fixed chests, like the two Carla opens in Leon 4 and Chris 3.
  • The game's voice option lets you play with Japanese voices in any region.
  • The Curious Fan title is granted if there's a finished Resident Evil 5 save on the console; unconfirmed on Switch.
  • "Ustanak" means "uprising" and "Lepotitsa" means "beauty" in Serbian. The J'avo mutations are named for what they are, too: Noga-Let is "leg-flight" and Glava-Smech "head-laughter".
  • The Lepotitsa and its gas are the source of the Tall Oaks outbreak.
