Verdict
Leon's most important weapon: it parries, finishes and uses no ammo. Buy Improved Grip as soon as you have spare credits, then Fortified Blade.
- Parry: tap L just before the hit. A perfect parry opens a finisher. It does not work on explosions, traps, the Blister Borne's charge or the cars the Super Tyrant throws.
- Sharpen: hold L + Y for about 3 s, free and unlimited in the story. A dull hatchet does not break, but it cannot parry. One parry of a heavy blow can blunt an un-upgraded edge; parrying a chainsaw or the Chef's cleaver blunts it at once.
- Finisher (ZR after a kick): it beheads, so that zombie will not rise as a Blister Head. Stealth kills behead too. Chop Chop trophy for 3 finishers.
- It opens the Warped Closets and the jammed 3F doors in ch04.
- Game8 and IGN: raise durability before the Super Tyrant (ch12). Against The Commander (ch13) bullets do nothing: parry only, then 1–2 hatchet hits.
- IGN: the Mortal Edge tops out below a fully tuned Hatchet. Game8 maxes the Hatchet for the finale and keeps the Mortal Edge as a backup.
- Infinite Durability (Hatchets), 20,000 CP: it never dulls.
- Leon Must Die Forever: sharpening is not free (you need Hatchet Repair or Parry Recovery). The Axe-orcist loadout is a Hatchet ★★ alone.
