The in-game menu: Resume game, Return to the latest checkpoint (restarts the checkpoint without a Game Over), Display other player's records, Change game settings, Change skills (switch skill set) and Quit game (unsaved progress is lost). Cutscenes are skipped from here too.

It runs in real time: enemies keep attacking while it's open. For a real pause (offline only) use +.
