The villagers pray to her like a priestess. You glimpse her in chapter 2 and she presides over the four lords' tribunal in chapter 3. She is the final boss.
Spoiler: she is a century-old biologist who found the Megamycete, the root of the mould, after losing her daughter Eva to the Spanish flu. She wants Rose as a vessel for Eva and can change shape: she was the prologue's "Mia" and the Hag too. Her diary (Miranda's Diary) is in her lab in chapter 12.
