Deliberate Practice

Not just repetition — purposeful, systematic practice at the edge of your ability with immediate feedback.

Anders Ericsson's research revealed that expertise does not come from passive experience or innate talent, but from deliberate practice: activities specifically designed to improve performance, conducted at the boundary of current ability, with immediate feedback and opportunities for repetition and refinement. The key distinction from mere practice is intentionality — each session targets a specific weakness, not just logs hours. A musician who plays through a piece is practicing; a musician who isolates the troublesome four bars and repeats them with variations until the fingers know the way — that is deliberate practice. It is uncomfortable by design, because comfort means you are not growing.
